The Tonkin cat is a mystery for felinologists. Either this is a young breed, or one of the oldest on earth. But the owners love these pets for their beauty and wonderful character, no matter what. History of the breed.
There is a version that the first mention of these animals is found in the treatises of Siam, and it was these animals that were brought to England in the nineteenth century under the guise of a chocolate Siamese. But the standard of the Siamese cat breed was formed in a different way and has undergone great changes.
Whether the Tonkin cat is an “old” type of Siamese or not will never be known for certain, no matter how much felinologists argue. In the sixties of the last century, the Canadian breeder Margaret Conroy, by crossing the Siamese and Burmese breeds, received a kitten and began to study a new variety, calling it after the Vietnamese area of Tonkin. After the standard was written, many years of breeding work passed. For fifteen years this cat was listed in hybrid breeds. True, this variety was originally called the “golden Siamese” because of its characteristic mink-like fur coat and color-point color.
The history of the breed’s name is romantic.
In the United States, there is a popular musical about the love of an American officer and a Tonkin girl – the story takes place on the Pacific Islands. The moral of the story is the victory of high sentiment over racial prejudices. The difficult fate of these cats, their long non-recognition was the reason for such an analogy. But the name “Tonkinesis” was originally associated with the musical, in which the main character is a resident of Tonkin. An Old Siamese cat named Wong Mau was brought to the United States by Dr. Joseph Thompson back in 1930.
Her descendants became breeding animals – they were crossed with the Canadian line and the procession of the Tonkin cat began across America. Today this breed is recognized by all felinological associations, but there are two of its standards – European and American. Features and breed standard. This breed is recognized by almost all felinological organizations, but it is most popular in the U.S.A and Canada. In morphology, Tonkinesis resembles a Thai cat, but has a shorter and wider, slightly snub nose. It is an animal of medium size and constitution with a peculiar coat and characteristic color-point. It comes from the crossing of a Siamese and a Burmese, it is distinguished by an aquamarine eye color. The description that W.C.F gives this breed is: Head. Wedge-shaped, wide enough. The profile and cheekbones are quite softly outlined, the feet are small in size on the bridge of the nose. Neck. Medium in size, strong and muscular. Eyes. Fairly wide apart, almond-shaped, but slightly rounded.
The color must match the color.

It is the delicate shades of color and its brilliant gloss – glitter – that gave such a name to the colors.
There are five main colors of the Tonkin cat.
Their characteristics: Natural mink. The main background is light brown, the points are dark brown. The abdomen and inner surfaces of the paws are lighter than the rest of the body. Paw pads and nose are light to dark brown. Honey mink. The main background is creamy with a golden apricot tint. The points are red-brown in different intensities. The pads and nose are pink caramel. Champagne. The main background is light cream, the points are light brown. Paw pads and nose – cinnamon shades of varying intensity. Blue mink. The main background is a silvery gray, almost lilac. The points are the same color, but more saturated with a lilac gloss. Paw pads and nose are pink to gray with lavender shades. Some feline systems combine honey and champagne mink into one category. In addition, the Siamese type of color is sometimes recognized – with a clear contrast from the background to the points, a solid Burmese color. The formation of colors is completely finished no earlier than one and a half years. Therefore, in kittens and young individuals, lighter background tones and weak spots in points are allowed. The T.I.C.A system also accepts other coat colors: tortie, apricot with a touch of cream. Character. Do not be afraid of the presence of Siamese cats in the genus: the Tonkinesis did not adopt the cool temper of their wayward ancestors.
But kindness and friendliness in them more than enough. Very calm, attentive, benevolent cats will perfectly fit into any family, will obediently obey the rules of the new house and try to help their owner in all his affairs. These are real mini-companions: the most interesting thing for them is to observe a person and try to participate in all his affairs. But at the same time they are absolutely devoid of obsession and touchiness. Thinly feeling the mood of the leader, tonkinesis will not get confused under his feet during the period of irritation, but will observe from afar and will come only at the right time. They get along well with children, even very young ones, and patiently endure children’s whims, but if the child hurts him, he will run away and will continue to hide from him. He prefers to be friends with relatives, however, and dogs too. With smaller creatures – birds and rodents, he will make friends if he grew up with them. However, he has no hunting instinct, but, wanting to play with a tiny mouse, he can accidentally injure it.
So don’t risk it. He loves to communicate with a person using sounds, but he does it quietly, without annoying with unrestrained meowing for many hours. Loneliness for him is a time of longing and sadness. He will not tear furniture or destroy everything around in protest, but he will refuse games and food, lie down on the windowsill and wait for his beloved person. If your job involves frequent absences from home, get not one, but two Tonkin cats. The Tonkie took the very best from both breeds that created him. He is energetic and mobile, like a Siamese, but more silent, obedient and agreeable, like a Burmese. A gentle and loyal pet always tries to stay close to the owner.
He wants to get into his arms, likes to sleep with people. Education, maintenance and care. Tonkinesis is very unpretentious to care for. Wool has no undercoat, molting does not bother either the owner or the animal. It is enough to remove sparse changing hair from the pet’s body with wet hands. There is no need to comb out either. For skin massage this procedure, if the cat loves it, can be carried out once a week. But this must be done carefully, with a brush with a soft hairy base, so as not to damage the delicate skin. You shouldn’t leave your cat alone next to an open window, especially on high floors. Even older animals are playful. Carried away by insect hunting, they can easily fall out. Tokinesis has practically no flaws, the middle name – the golden Siamese – is extremely similar to him. Health and nutrition.
